Ah, I know what Maurizio was asking, because I was just searching for the same answer. Here is the question:
What is the easiest way to take a Debian 3.1r0a Sarge DVD, which came with a book I purchased, and convert it to multiple CDs?
The DVD is bootable, of course, so that makes it more complicated than just copying the files. The book (The Debian System, by Martin Krafft, pub by Open Source Press, which I highly recommend for intermediate Linux users) says the DVD is equivalent to 7 CDs. I have access to a DVD drive at work, so I figure I can get a file list of the Debian CDs and split the DVD into equivalent pieces. But what about making CD #1 bootable? I don't know if that is possible. (I would be doing this on a Windows PC.)
So in a nutshell, the situation is that my Linux box at home is on dialup and doesn't have a DVD drive. At work, I've got a DVD drive on a Windows 2000 machine. What's the best way to put all this together and make 7 CDs out of a Sarge DVD installation disk?

FYI for future reference for someone, I downloaded the netinst iso (108 MB) on a borrowed broadband connection, and got that installed. (This includes an option to set up PPP, so I can get whatever security updates there are.) Then, I expect all I have to do is break up the /pool directory on the dvd and burn it to cds (using a borrowed computer) and set up apt to install from cd-rom.
In other words, I found no "easy way" to convert a bootable dvd to multiple cds...
