DVD burning (k3b) really CPU intensive?

Is it normal for burning DVD-R's to be really CPU intensive? Like 80-90+% of my 2.66 GHz P4? I'm using 1GB of RAM, and this is my first experience burning a DVD.

Edit: Also, my write speed hovers around 1.4x so it's also Really slow.

I am looking at the "top" outout now as I'm burning a music CD using k3b. The "cdrecord" process is taking up less than 10% of the CPU power (if that's what you call it). I can't imagine DVD burning being much more CPU intensive.

What are you burning? Burning an image onto a DVD I wouldn't imagine would be very CPU intensive but if it's encoding XviD to MPEG2 or decoding MP3s then there goes your CPU usage.

I'm burning a bunch of video files (avi) to a data dvd. Burning a regular CD-R isn't nearly as intensive.

It doesn't involve compression/decompression or any form of decoding, does it? I'd imagine there'd be lots of disk I/O with DVD burning, but 80-90% CPU sounds way too much unless decompression/decoding type stuff is going on.

Nope. Just burning any ol' files, no compression/decompression.

Check your bios and dmesg,

If DMA is not enabled on the controller for the cddrive (either because its disabled in the bios, or disabled in the kernel) The cpu will have to do massive work to burn a disk/disc.
