I tried with KDE (Kubuntu to be exact), I really did, but then I kept having problems with my Win-XP install fighting with Grub 2 and gave it up for OpenSUSE (which is going great).
The box I put Kubuntu on has a 2GB dual-core chip with 2GBs of RAM and it still had the shakes, even with some of the Window-animations... Perhaps Compiz and some video-drivers (which I believe were installed) would've done the trick...

I think KDE tends to NOT want Compiz. I don't think they outright conflict, but KWin does a lot of the same stuff.
Hardware-accelerated video drivers, on the other hand, are essential for fancy effects.
