dng file viewer


Does anyone know of a good dng file viewer. I used to be a photographer and have quite a large number of dng file that I have no way to view at the moment without booting back to windows which I would rather not have to do. So far google has been of no help at all.

It depends on what your workflow is, but gpicview, eog (Eye of GNOME), ristretto, gwenview, or xzgv might already be on your system.

If you need to lay them out like in the old days on a light table, then Darktable is another option.

Edit: RawTherapee is another in a similar category to Darktable.

I'm really not working with them any longer, just want to be able to view them if needed. I will give all of your suggestions a try.

OK, first I need to apologize, don't know where my mind was at, I don't need to view .png files, but .dng files. Did't realize my mistake until I went into my archive and couldn't find any .png files. Scared me for a minute.

Anyway all is well, gwenview is a great .dng viewer.

Really appreciate the help.

These are both great suggestions as will, I'll need to play around with these 2 as well as gwenview for awhile as time permits and see what works best and what my needs will be. For now they are all installed.

Heh, I was confused by why a photographer might have so many PNG files (and also be unable to view them since support for that format is built into every modern OS).

If you edit the first post, you should be able to correct the title, which will be helpful for anyone searching for DNG viewers in future.


Personally I find every Linux-based raw processing/management tool I've tried leaves a lot to be desired, but live in hope that one day someone will do something about that and I can finally ditch Lightroom.

Anyway, you've got plenty of suggestions already, but may find this list of software useful: https://pixls.us/software/

I'm not doing photography any longer, just wanted access to my images. Not sure where my mind was but I'll go back and edit the first post.
I can't tell you how happy I am to be away from windows. It does remain to be seen if I'll be able to do my taxes next year in Linux, that's why I kept one dual boot laptop just in case.

For many years I used a combination of Gwenview and The GIMP. Most viewers, e.g., Gwenview, will allow you to right click on an image, which generates a sub-menu and you can chose to "export" the image into another application, e.g., The GIMP, for editing.
XnView has numerous editing tools built-in, so I rarely use The GIMP anymore, but it still my first choice for more complicated image manipulation.

Edit in: BTW, XnView can also be used as a file manager.

Use dcraw to convert them to an actual image format. Raw files aren't images; they're sensor data.
