Direct Rendering : Yes - FPS: blink, blink, blink...

Pretty funny, but heres the rundown.
Debian linux kernel 2.6.18.2 Xorg 7.1.1 with Matrox single head G400
Trying to get some hardware acceleration as was implemented in my previously stable configuration with XFree86.

I followed the instruction listed at www.dri.sourceforge.net, I could not get drm to compile with make. I presume Mesa has installed fine.
I've install card drivers posted http://http://www.tuxx-home.at/ar...T11_52_15/
for xorg 7.1.1 editing xorg.conf to include:
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "IgnoreABI" "True"
EndSection

As of this point, I'm not really sure whats wrong. I have X running and as per glxinfo, I do have Direct Rendering: Yes. I can run dvd's, I can use OpenGL screensavers, I can even run 3ddesktop(provided I do not restart X). I'm no gamer so these are pretty much the only apps I can test with. Oh yes, glxgears...glxgears does not report anything, the cursor stands idle while the gears move really slowly. I had hoped that at lease something would have been reported....anyways, I'm lost....about to do some more googling on the matter....heres my log...
Any thoughts?

Xorg log - fresh boot.
