Desktop - window manager

Hi folks,

I'm goting to select a light-weight window manager for BLFS 6.1 which I'm building. According to my search there are many of them.

According to the voting on
http://xwinman.org/vote.php
window-maker ranks on top

What your folks will recommend other than KDE, GNOME and Xfce.

My requirements are;
small in size
quick to start
one workspace
XPM support

TIA

B.R.

Thumbs up the answer is window maker

window maker is the solution for a low memory consuming wm and beautiful also.
but if you remember all the programs you have (by their filename) you can use twm, it's ultra light.
you don't have ofcourse a toolbar, you run the program from the xterm and then you can dock it on the desktop.
But again window maker is just the thing you need from what I see from your post

Is "window maker" a light weight OR heavy weight package, taking up lot of HD space? TIA

The smallest "traditional" window manager I know is IceWM. Smaller ones are very unusual (Ion...).

Yves.

Edit: well... TWM is probably smaller, but maybe too small, don't you think?

both

the source is only 2.8Megs I don't think that after extracting it and compiling it will be bigger than 4. I don't think you have that small hdd right?
anyway you should give it a try it's really good but please check http://www.windowmaker.org to see in detail if it cover your needs.

Fluxbox. Not sure if it meets all of your requirements, but is a nice wm for old machines.

And in case some wonder... Fluxbox is bigger than IceWM (to be more precise: FB uses more memory than Ice).
