Deleting a selection in Audacity

I have just installed Ubuntu (9.04) and Audacity (1.3.7)

If I open a WAV file in Audacity and select part of the file (the tail) I can export that selection as a new WAV. However, if I then try to delete that still selected selection I cannot do it: My only option is to re-select it.

Any ideas how I can Export and then delete the same selection?

the way i would do it is select the part (make sure you click stop first)
then ctrl+x and ctrl+n then ctrl+v
that cuts it out (copy and delete) opens a new project and pastes it in
you dont need to press + though
