What do you get when you do a

Code:
file -i ramdisk.dat

or

file -s ramdisk.dat
There are a lot of ways to generate a file like ramdisk.dat (dd, acronis, etc.) and depending on what you're using and how can make fairly drastic difference in the answer to your question.

Code:
# file -s ramdisk.dat
ramdisk.dat: gzip compressed data, was "ramdisk.dat.initrd", from FAT filesystem (MS-DOS, OS/2, NT), last modified: Sun Oct 19 02:00:20 2008
# file -i ramdisk.dat
ramdisk.dat: application/x-gzip

I can uncompress using tar on freeBSD:
Code:
# tar xvzf ramdisk.dat -C /mnt/tmp
but it doesn't work on Debian:
Code:
# tar xvzf ramdisk.dat -C /home/ramdisk/tmp
tar: This does not look like a tar archive
tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
