I had the same problem. Now ,follow CAREFULLY my instructions
IMPORTANT:FIRST MAKE A COPY OF THE FILE YOU ARE GONNA CHANGE, WITH THE SAME NAME PLUS .OLD
EX. FOO.OLD
1)first get out of X
2)cd /etc/X11/
3)ls
You'll there find a file called XF86Config or XF86Config-4
4) nano XF86Config or XF86Config-4
5)In the file you'll find many lines containing "800x600"
Just write "1024x760" and put it next to "800x600"(or before, it doesn't matter)
It should look similar:
"1024x760" "800x600" "<other res>
Make these changes to all lines wich contain "800x600"(you could only change the 24 bit line too)
DON'T FORGET TO SAVE THE FILE!
6)restart X
7)From GNOME/KDE Change the Resolution to 1024x760
That should do!
