Debian, DRI, and kernel modules

I have recently installed Debian (sarge) with kernel 2.4.25 and I have been having some trouble getting DRI installed for my ATI Radeon 9600 XT. I used apt to download X and I also downloaded the drivers needed with my card, but when I go to install DRI, I get this error right when DRI is trying to compile the drivers:

ERROR: Kernel modules did not compile

The DRI drivers can not be installed without the latest kernel modules. Installation will be aborted. See the dri.log file for more information on what went wrong.

And this is what's in the dri.log file:

Makefile:168: *** Cannot find a kernel config file. Stop.

If someone has a possible solution to this problem, I would greatly appreciate your help.

You have to recompile the kernel and say "Y" to DRI and to the ATI Radeon! Then you can make an install of that drivers..

You Installed the kernel by the APT? it's possible you to have to download kernel tree!
