creating crash logs

I find it very odd that when an application crashes no logs are written to the home folder of the logged in user or /var/log

Lately my xmms was crashing sporadically. I kept launching it via a launcher on the desktop, hence everytime it crashed I was left with nothing to go by. I eventually just started it via terminal and when it crashed I got my output. Problem solved now.

But, is there a way to get the kernel to log crash dumps when applications bomb?

Just curious. Thanks.

Scott

I'm assuming you're talking about user applications only...

You could change the command used to start the application from the menu to include piping the output to a file. For example, if an application doesn't support using syslog, the following will send its output to firefox.log in your home directory:
Code:
/usr/bin/firefox &>~/firefox.log
You may still get nothing, it depends on the circumstances of the application crash.

I didn't think of doing it that way. I could basically change my launchers to pipe out to a log folder and a specific file, OR, pipe to tty2-3-etc...

Thanks for the idea
