create contact sheets

I'm looking for something with which to create contact sheets, those handy image indexes that make it easy to catalog and find your photos. I used "Display" when I did dos, and it's very good, but I'd rather have a Linux way so I don't have to boot another OS. )
Preferably for the console, but I'll use xwindows if I must.

Okay, just for those who might be interested, I found "icontact", a Perl script for creating contact sheets.
