Controlling Gnome File Manager

remember the old gmc... gnome's original file manager?

I want to use gmc... however when I close the file browser I don't want the process to stay resident... I don't want it to put any icons on the desktop. I just want a file manager that doesn't try to create a desktop or stay resident when I'm not using it.

thanks for any help,
jpbarto
