Hello!
I've just got this PC with originally SLED SP1 installed. After hours, it seems that it has updated to SP2, but I'm still lost!
I can't open help files, and I can't find out how to install downloaded programmes.
For example, I would prefer to use Google Chrome as browser, and I can download Chrome for Linux, it shows up on the desktop, but that's it!I have no idea how to install it - it doesn't show up on "new installation: or anywhere else!
Really - I'm completely lost! Any adresses or advice would be enormously appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

It seems that SLED do have YAST .
Yast stands for Yet A Other System Tool.
With the help of Yast you can install or uninstall software
Yast > Software.
Using Yast> hardware you also can configure you computer .
Yast is really a great help to get you computer in the way you like it to be.
IT also seems that SLED do have KDE and GNOME
To help you further it would be nice to know if you use GNOME or KDE.

Thank you for your quick reply! Yes, I am aware of YAST, and I've tried to use it on a few occasions, but with no success. I'll go back and try again. Incidentally, the PC, when updating installed a thing called "YAST 2" which I haven't had the time to investigate.
On the GNOME/KDE side, I seem to be using GNOME, but when I tried to install/configure my "Screensaver" programme, a page calling itself "Enabling KDE", so now I'm not too sure what I'm using! All very complicated this so called simple system!
I'm listening to all possibilities, hoping one of them will let me know what to do!
Thanks again! (iwmpop)
Suse 10 SLED : Don't expect Google "Chrome" to work ?
Linux : At large, you do not download stuff for install.
Use Yast2, as said by ronlau9 , or at the command line :
1) su
2) zypper se <keyword>
.. will search, and tell, what's available.
3) zypper in <package-name>
.. downloads and installs the software automatically.
.....
Thank you too for this information.
Actually, I had this information about zypper from another forum source, and tried it - to no effect, All I got was "no answers found". At the time I was trying to load the package "Packman" to enable me to install plug ins etc to allow my DVD programme to read "commercial DVD's".
I now understand that the instruction given were in fact for SLED 11 (!) so I suppose I'll have to go back and see what I can do with the zypper set up again!
Please do keep up the tips and advice, I promise it won't be wasted, I WILL investigate every possibility - in time!
Just a quick question - Why does "Chrome" have a special download for Linux if it won't work, or is that download for a different Linux system?
Thanks again! (iwmpop)

Packman has his own repository any how that goes for opensuse so if the same apply for SLED than you have to add the repository first before you can install it
Well - nice to know there are some "good guys" out there who are trying to help! Please keep it up - I'll try to do my bit!
My system shows up (when I click on Hard drive) as "SLED 10 (i586)". Doesn't show SP1 or SP2, but I know when I started, that the system took some hours to install various updates, one of which was marked "SP2", so I assume I've got "SP2"!
There was also a note about "SP3" during these uploads, but the page automaticall closed before I could make a note of it.
If someone could tell WHERE on the system I can go to get exact details of which system and SP I'm using. Even Windows tells me on my other PC that I'm working on an installed "XP" - "SP3" from Windows! It must be possible to see this info somewhere!
I've tried following the instructions given earlier to use YAST to download and install, but to no avail!
The strange thing is that of all the programmes/apps I've tried to download & install the only one that has worked was the Google programme for photos "Picasa" - worked with no problem, and I use it all the time!So....why that particular one but no other one....?
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered....(iwmpop)
SLED 10 - (SP1 or 2?)- Sorry, I forgot to ask another question - Why does the system refuse to open the "HELP" pages? This would give me the possibility to look there instead of annoying, boring and disturbing you all!(iwmpop)

HELP pages : may be removed, or never installed.
The fact, that you get updates, indicates a Suse account.
So why not ask Suse, if you have problems with Yast2 ?
And by the way : Packman is not a package,
is an extra repo URL for extra packages for
Suse 11 , 11.1 , 11.2 , but not for Suse 10
any more. Suse 10 is too old.
The only support is the paid Suse account.

"Open Source" - yes - if anybody can understand it!
If I have to pay for anything on this largely publicised FREE operating system, then I'll just go back to Windows, where I at least understand what's going on!
Anybody want to buy a brand new PC with a 5 year old, no longer supported SLED 10 operating system pre-installed from "MSI"?
I'll be selling it cheap before it collects too much dust.
Bye and thanks anyway.
