compile initrd on SuSE

Hi:

I try to use mkCDrec on my SuSE server which is a x86_64 machine. When I ran "make test", I have a warning:

Test 14: initrd must be compiled in kernel! Warning
Check manual: /usr/src/linux/.config file

Then I just ignored it and ran "make" to make a backup CD. But I met the following error and the script just quit itself:

------------< Leaving initrd.sh >-----------
/var/opt/mkcdrec/scripts/bootx86_64.sh
-------------< Entering bootx86_64.sh >-------------

LINUX_KERNEL=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.5-7.257-smp
Will copy the following kernel to the isolinux directory.
Make CD-ROM bootable with isolinux
cp: missing destination file
Try `cp --help' for more information.
ERROR:
Fatal: Cannot find isolinux.bin
Press [ENTER] to exit: :
make[1]: *** [boot.img] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/opt/mkcdrec'
make: *** [all] Error 2

Anybody knows how to solve this problem? Do I have to re-compile the SuSE SLE 9 kernel to include initrd?

Thanks!

Unfortunately yes you have to recompile the kernel to build in support for initrd. As for the isolinux.bin, you can download that from various places on the net.

Compileing the kernel is not as hard as you may think. when I compile a new kernel I use the make xconfig command, it gives you a nice graphically screen to compile your kernel. All though if it is on a server you may not have the GTK+ libiriaries installed to use the graphical feature, you may just have to use the command line.

Or better still I you have another machine somewhere you can compile it on that one and them move it over to the server.
