Compact Gentoo Installation? (On usb-stick)

What I wan't is to run gentoo from my usb-stick ("df -h" says around 2.4 gb, the rest is fat32). However the problem is that, when i install gentoo, it starts complaining the drive is full, but then i only used around 800mb of it. Why does it start complaining?

Is there a way to install a compact installation of gentoo? I have noticed that portage is around 700mb, i nice trick would be to store portage on the harddrive of my pc. After all i will only do the installation of programs at home.

Maybe using squashfs?
Maybe excluding files from portage, but i don't know if this is easily possible.

This how-to is for Gentoo 2007, but I would think it should work the same for the current version.

I have allready seen that method, but it is a live installation. It stores the changes in the RAM.

A method I'm trying right now is to put portage into a squashfs. When it's compressed, portage is on about 45mb instead of 600-700mb.
I hope this will work. The guide I'm following can be found at http://www.gentoo-wiki.info/HOWTO_VE...FS_and_UnionFS
