[solved] Command Line Freaking Out (on boot as well)
My latest problem comes in a weird manner. I run Gentoo 2006.0, updated from 2005.1. AMD Tbird 1.4GHz, 512 Ram, DLink 520 or 530 (madwifi), Nvidia GeForce 5200FX PCI. System runs with the ~x86 to use unstable/testing packages. problem started 2 days back where the command line (only xterm at the time, not on boot) would put in a ton of ~ at random, didnt know why, still dont. it was about 2 days after an update to the 2.6.16-gentoo-r1 kernel (gentoo-sources).
it's an odd thing, so i rebooted, despite not wanting to. the problem then occured on boot, directly after kernel modules begin loading. I used genkernel to compile because custom compiles havent been playing nice lately...
anyone have a problem like this before, or know how to make the system stop responding to this error? Also, it causes some things to crash (BZFlag 2.0.4, 2.0.5 and 2.0.6 all crashed after starting, Banshee and XMMS both crash after about 3 minutes). I think its related to this due to the 3 having worked fine previously. I've done it in the 2.6.15-gentoo-r10 kernel, and the same things happen. Could having changed the Gentoo CHOST var caused this (I did a bootstrap, emerge sync, system and world). It worked fine before on the 2.6.15 which was compiled under i386 settings, then it started to freak once i changed it to i686. 2.6.16 worked fine as well for 2 days or so then just started to do this
Any Ideas?

P.S.: I have posted on the gentoo forums, 1 reply and it was to ask some questions, never heard back after i responded.

what do your logs (/var/log/*) indicate when this occurs?
If you boot on the previous kernel does the problem not happen?
...more ?'s than answers -- but it will help to answer the problem.

I'm not sure if this is the problem or not but I noticed you have an nvidia card. A lot of people have been getting strange unexplicipal errors which have all been fixed by updating to the new nvidia driver that came out a few days ago. It's worth a shot at least.
regards,

my logs show nothing odd except an error on the keystroke that i use to stop it (` and ESC cause it to stop for a 5 minute period). the previous kernel shows it now, but didnt before the problem...
Could the problem be that I have upgraded to the newest NVidia drivers? The problem started 2 days before i updated the kernel, the day after i updated my nvidia drivers... I never had problems with them before.
I'm at class right now, so I cant access the system (turned off the virtual servers through my router and shutdown most net programs for security purposes), I'll post the result of updating the nvidia drivers, or if they are the newest, going back one version.
thanks for the responses
