Angry Chromium can't open downloads when running without a DE

When I'm running without a desktop environment, whenever I click a download in Chromium to open it it downloads another copy instead of opening it in an appropriate program! How do I stop this?

Also, what if I just want to view a PDF and not download it to my home dir?

Do you have a ~/.mailcap or /etc/mailcap file? I guess chromium needs to know what program to use to open different file types.

I don't have one in ~, but I do in /etc. It only has one entry:

Code:
application/x-java-jnlp-file;/opt/java/jre/bin/javaws %s
Just a few more questions:
  • What would be an easy way to fill it in?
  • Why is it called "mailcap"?
  • Why does Chromium work right in a DE?

Yes, just a window manager.

Check your package manager for packages with names or descriptions including the terms "mime" and "mailcap". Failing that, google.

It was originally devised to tell email clients what to do with files they could not display directly.
Code:
man 5 mailcap

I suspect that if you are running a DE, chromium will somehow query the DE to find out what to do with different files.
