choosing RedHat or SUSE for running MagmaSoft

Hello,

I am new to the Linux world. I have gotten approval to purchase 2 new computers for running MagmaSoft (metal solidification software). Our IT department tells me I have to purchase from Dell. As I understand, Dell will only install RedHat at this time, but will sell us SUSE. Additionally our IT has no experience with either of these.

The people from MagmaSoft have data showing that Linux will run the benchmark program they have faster than Win XP so I want to use Linux. MagmaSoft has recommended SUSE but I do not know why or if they have compared the two versions. They are also not willing to provide support in the use or implementation of either Linux OS.

With these given conditions, I am concerned about support of SUSE since Dell is not going to install. I want to ask for which ever version of Linux will run these simulations faster, but I do not know which version to specify. I am looking for anybody that has some advise of which of these products may be better for number crunching type of program or be more bulletproof in its day to day operation.

Thank you in advance for your advise

Bill Jensen

If you are looking to purchase Suse you might enquire as to what support novell will provide you with the purchase of there product.

Suse is probably the easier of the 2 to start up with, but then, your IT guys might certainly be well equipped to get up to speed with either.

You might want to mention what version of the OS's you are considering as I think both companies provide different "versions" of NIX...enterprise,professional etc... to get better feedback from others.

Heck a free ftp install might do but will require some research into what processes you can shutdown to maximize the usage of the systems you are purchasing which are ???..system specs
