Changing shortcut keys for gedit using /.config/gedit/accels has no impact in program

I'm this close to switching to Kate as many recommend. I hesitate because I use gedit in a lot of alias commands and cron jobs.

I'm trying to edit the shortcut keys for gedit, but when I change the keys in /home/matias/.config/gedit/accels, the new keys I map have no impact, and the old ones still function as before.

As per other threads on this topic, I

1) did my editing in nano
2) no copy of gedit was running
3) chmod +w on file

I saw this thread on a similar issue, but I have gtk-2.0 in my .config/ directory, not gtk-3.0, nor anything *.css. I tried adding gtk.css in the gtk-2.0 directory with the code from the same link above, but it had no impact.

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS
Release: 14.04
Codename: trusty

Using Xubuntu, xfce4

So what can I do? I'm a little lost at this point. It seems like that accels file is a decoy.....

Assuming I can't easily fix this, I suppose I could use sed -i to go and change all the instances of gedit in my bashrc, bash files, cron, etc....or is there an easier way?

ssmtp cannot open mailhub:25, but that's not the port I set

I found a wonderful plugin here which does the trick. There are more than one which allow ctrl+tab switching, but I can vouch for Control Your Tabs.
