Can you give a little better description of what it is you want to do?
If you want to change into xwindow, type the command: startx or init 5 .

I mean within X I want to swap virtual desktops using the command line - like you would do with a pager.

I use a tool called wmctrl that can do this. You can find it here: http://sweb.cz/tripie/utils/wmctrl/

control-tab to page through the available desktops.

It's just a keyboard operation; no command-line involved.
