question

what is the command you are typing in....?
Are you sighned in as root?

yes and yes

any command fails; i.e. "cdrecord -scandevices" for example

logged in as root yes.

it's not a common problem AFAIK

hmm....

After upgrading to 2.6 test10 I now can't see the ide-scsi module. I don't seem to have a cdwriter in /dev anymore...

nightmare, having to use Windows to backup
