i have downloaded Ubuntu as file "ubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386[1]" then when i try to download onto a cd using CDBurnerXP it says "no media inserted in selected device. please insert a recordable media and try again," and i have cd-r in my computer. can anyone please help me?

Well, 'course CDBurnXP is window$ program and your problem doesn't refer *nix systems at all, you better ask microsoft tech support or some windows forum about this problem.
All I can say to you - check, if there are no previous records on you CD-R disk.
And don't forget to write iso image as image, not as file.
