cd players are inaudible

I have a problem with playing (not ripping) CDs.

I use kde and various multimedia gnome based application and sound works in all cases. I use the emu10k alsa drivers with the oss emulation for apps like realplayer. But CD players (kscd, gnome cd player) play CDs but no sound comes out.

The CD mixer setting is available and is not set to 0. Any ideas ?

I don't think I've disconnected anything like that but I'll check. Thanks for the suggestion.
