cardmgr crashes system!

I am trying to get my orinoco pcmcia wireless card to work in my new Gentoo installation on my Dell Inspiron 8100 - not such a difficult proposition, except that whenever run, cardmgr immediately HANGS the whole system. It goes down, hard - the entire system does not respond and I have to hold the power button for 15 seconds.

What is going on here? How can I make it not go on?

same problem here

I am having the same problem on an Inspiron 8000.

If I try to cheat and hotplug the card in aftewards, it still locks up the system.

I have tried 2 different PCMCIA cards: Xircom CBE2-100 Ethernet and Linksys PCMLM56 Ethernet/Modem combo. Both hang the system, so this is most likely a problem between cardmgr or Dell's PCMCIA hardware.
