cannot install a tar.gz file anymore for Netscape

I have a huge question,

I had forgotten how to install a tar.gz file so I looked up the instructions online. I found the instructions and could not get the file to install by using the shell prompt. I tried it several times and I would close the Shell prompt.

When the shell prompt would close it would say: "session shell exited with status 2."

I finally found the correct instructions as to how to install a tar.gz file and thus I redownloaded the netscape.tar.gz file.

I proceeded by using the correct instructions but whenever I would try to untar the archive I would get the following error message:

chichenitza@rn099085:~> tar -zxvf netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-installer.tar.gz
tar: netscape-i686-pc-linux-gnu-installer.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

how can I keep this from happening so that I can install the desired program.

Make sure you are in the right directory;
chichenitza@rn099085:~>ls (you should see the file) then
chichenitza@rn099085:~>tar xzvf netscape(now press the tab to complete it)then <enter>
