cannot connect to internet/network

I am trying to put a Debian Etch system on an old laptop...installed OK, yesterday everything was fine, today I cannot get eth0 to work.

"ping 192.168.2.120" test results in an "Unable to reach network" message. (192.168.2.120 is my other computer connected to the router..it is working and connected...I'm using it to send this).

The led's on the router seem to indicate that I have a connection to the laptop so I don't think it's a hdware issue.

"ifconfig -a" results in
Code:
ifconfig -a
eth0 Link encap: Ethernet HWaddr 00:09:5B0B:27:0A
        inet6 addr: fe80::209:5bff:fe0b:270a/64
        UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric1
        RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:1
        TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
        collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
        RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:468 (468.0 b)
        Interrupt:3 Base addr:0x300
How do I troubleshoot this?

Thanks

What type of network card is it (PCMCIA/onboard ethernet, PCMCIA/oboard 802.11x...)?
Did the network card register when you installed Debian - did you do a netinstall, or did you use the DVD/multi-CD install?

Have you tried raising interface?
Code:
# ifconfig eth0 up

it is a netgear pci inserted card, it was working. I did a netinstall. ifconfig eth0 up does nothing.

Is there a pcmcia script in /etc/init.d? Maybe try starting it ("# /etc/init.d/pcmcia start")?

I mean, that script should be run on startup. If there is a script like that there, and starting it (or restarting it) succeeds, try re-raising eth0.

Code:
ls /etc/init.d/pcm*
/etc/init.d/pcmciautils

/etc/init.d/pcmciautils start
PCMCIA bridge driver already present in kernel
there is also a pcmcia folder in /etc/, it contains only a file "config.opts"

I have also tried "pump -i /dev/eth0" but I get only a "command not found" message. Pump command must be part of a package I don't have installed.

Pump is a DHCP client. I'm pretty sure the Debian default is dhcpcd.

Perhaps that is the problem, I think I have always used DHCP. How do I check/change this?

The surprising thing to me is that it worked yesterday but today when I booted up....nothing.

Changing it around is as simple as:
Code:
# apt-get remove pump && apt-get install dchpcd
Automatic configuration should take care of the rest.
