can not put softwear on to ubuntu

I am new to linux i don't how to put softwear on to ubuntu 8 each time i try it says wrong application i am only ever used windows xp is there a manual that will show me how to use this softwear

from the command line you use the apt-get function like:

apt-get install bind9

What software are you trying to install? If you are trying to install software written for Windows, you are likely to have problems. You will need to run inside of a compatibility layer such as WINE. However, if it is for Linux, you will need to furthur explain!

To install Software from the Ubuntu Repository use the Synaptic Package Manager

System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager

If you are trying to install Windows Applications on Ubuntu you will need to use wine as Jevan suggested, But if you look at all the software available for Linux you will find programs that can handle your tasks using free software. Windows / Linux - Table of software equivalents
