Can Linux run along side Windows

I've just ordered Linux Mandriva Discovery / Lx 2006 Beginners.
I'm currently running Windows XP but my computer isn't being maximised, for a start I've got a 250gb hard drive not doing anything.... if I install Linux on this hard drive, will it run along side Windows XP Home?

If so, is there anything I need to know? Like how do you choose which OS to boot with every time you turn your computer on?

All help and advice will be greatly appreciated so please comment.

Thanks all,

search for dual booting...there are a lot of posts on it including how tos.

The value of forums like these are for the solutions to be in the forums, so when other users have similar questions and/or problems, they can benefit from previous posts. Thats saying they actually search, which is very uncommon lately.. So this means, the answers shouldn't be emailed to you but posted here.
