Ok, so I was using mplayer and my DVD rom drive stuffed up. Somehow, a huge file was created that used up the free 1GB of free space!?! So of course, xfs couldnt start (and in turn x couldnt start either).

I was logged in as root, deleted 2MB of files (it is ok to just clear /tmp isnt it?) and startx now worked. I still wasnt sure what was using that 1GB on my HD?

so i logged in as luke (the user account i use the most), and all of a sudden, the 1GB of disk space cam back from the unknown fantasy land

anyway, was there some kind of temp file that was deleted when i started up X, logged in as the user who muxt of created that huge file?

maybe mplayer did a core dump? What was the file's name and location?

well, I dont know because I logged in with my account, ran df -h and all of a sudden, there was that 1GB free again.

So a core dump may have been it...i dunno
