Can't write to external hard drive

I have a LaCie external hard drive attached to my laptop through a usb port. I am using pclinuxos.

Up until now I have been able to write to it without trouble. Now, even as root, it denies me permission to write. The only thing that has changed is that last night I recorded a movie directly to it using neuros osd.

How do I enable writing again?

Here is some more information. The drive somehow changed itself to "read-only". How do I enable writing again. I tried chown but it kept the read-only requirement.

More information. /etc/fstab has rw. However the drive carries the read-only designation to other devices.

I tried to call LaCie for technical help but I was on hold so long that the battery in my telephone discharged.

For some reason, I had an external Maxtor drive and it did the same thing. All I did was pull out the cable, umount /mnt/usb to make sure, and plugged the thing back in.

Maybe some bug in the usb built-in driver.
