Can't login via ttyS0 serial connection

I have sucessfully netbooted a Cobalt RaQ550 off a Debian NFS share, and can get the login prompt displaying on a serial connection to the RaQ550.

Whenever I type in a username that actually exists, it pauses for a second and then just re-displays the login prompt. When I enter a username that DOESN'T exist, I am prompted for a password and then (obviously) the login fails.

I do have 'ttyS0' listed in the 'securetty' file. Can anyone help here?
