Can't install Mint 18,3 from usb

I assume it's because I've not wiped the old Mint 17,3 from the disk. My previous installations were on new empty PCs or new disks. Also should I format the disk to ext4 before installing. An assumption is since I could install on new disks without doing so it isn't necessary. However if I use gparted to clean the disk (i.e. make one empty partition I might as well do the ext4 format. The current disk contains one ext4 partition.

Can you provide actual errors or screenshots of the errors? "It isn't working" isn't descriptive enough to know what is actually going on.

It doesn't access the disk - disk light doesn't blink. However I see that the WiFI does a few times. I therefore assume that I need to empty my disk. I just saw that the existence of an OS might be the problem. I don't get the window saying I don't have an OS. Am now making a live GParted.

I also noticed that the vesamenu.c32 has a file type:unknown size:26.7kB date:Wed Feb 216.
This differs from the file description on my 17.3 which has a file type bin and another size. Is this going to be a problem.

I also don't get the question about installing 3rd party drivers.

I've no idea after about 15 attempts it is working. Is the possibly corrupted vesamenu.c32 going to give me a problem?
