Can't find X includes

I've been having some trouble trying to install non-rpm apps because my distro didn't come with gcc. I believe I've managed to install the necessary packages, but when I try to run:

./configure

it returns:

[snip]
checking for X... configure: error: Can't find X includes. Please check your installation and add the correct paths!

What does this mean? WHat exactly do I need to do / install / change?
