Can't change kernel, updates hang and fail

Windows on this box got borked so I got rid of it; but it had also totally screwed over the linux installations, too, so I've had to start over.

I got Manjaro Cinnamon installed, but now it tells me I've successfully upgraded the kernel from 4.19 into 5.x, but nothing has happened - after rebooting I still have 4.19.

Software update is also hanging for ages and then saying the transaction hooks failed.

Code:
error hook /usr/share/libalpm/hooks/60-mkinitcpio-remove.hook line 2: invalid value

error hook /usr/share/libalpm/hooks/90-mkinitcpio-install.hook line 2: invalid value
What info can I give to help me solve this, pls?

Navigate to /usr/share/libalpm/hooks/60-mkinitcpio-remove.hook and /usr/share//libalpm/hooks/60-mkinitcpio-install.hook --> open these with an editor. Copy line 2 from each here so we can see what the errors you posted above are telling you.

OR... if someone here already knows/is familiar with this error, maybe you won't need to post them here. Stand by for further assistance...

Oh, and the basics we'll need from you:

- Which Linux are you using?

- What version?

Thanks....

But memtest eventually flagged a RAM stick; all good now.

The box had basically self-destructed - for no apparent reason it wouldn't boot one day.
Couldn't repair Windows (sometimes used for gaming), nor would Linux boot.
After multiple attempts to get up and running, after all the hardware had passed tests, even the RAM, I let memtest run for more than a day, and at about then it flagged this one stick. Replaced it and everything worked fine, all back to normal.
