can't assign the date in expect

how do you assign the date to a variable in expect

set DATE date +%m-%d-%y

doesn't work

sorry the old post was fixed days ago.....this was slightly different different problem. sorry i didn't think i needed to go back to the older post b/c of that. however i have retitled the same question once in a different post (however this one was not suppose to be renaming the older post from a few days ago) .....i will try to do better. sorry
