Call to a regular phone using a modem??

hello
i would like to know if there is any program to call a normal
phone using a standard modem, just like using another phone

i don't want to dial up an isp, i just want to use the standard
phone service i already use and use some mic/headset to talk,

the simples way i could imagine is to plug the phone cable, and
use the software to 'pick up' and dial the local number (or any
number my contract allows), then just talk using the headset,
ideally it would also answer and incoming call

i have pppd and wvdial installed but they seem to do far more than
i need

thanks for your help and advise

Basically it seems you have what you need, though you may want to consider minicom too, as an alternate means of controlling the modem, or as mentioned in the link above, something called 'dtmfdial' or whatever it was called.

Minicom too is probably 'more than you need', but 'more' is probably better than 'less'.

Read through the thread/follow the follow-ups on that mailing list at that link and see if that helps.

I am guessing (not from experience) that if you plug a mic and speakers (or headset combo) into the modem, it will do what you want.
