Caldera and USB

Hi all
I installed Caldera open Linux because it supports my Diamond USB modem. Install went great and so far I like the O/S, only problem is....now my USB ports dont work! They did with Windows which is what I removed from the box. I have read through my large manual that I purchased with no success, how can I enable USB support?

Thanks

make sure you are using a 2.4 kernel for full USB suppord.
You might want to compile a new kernel.

I went to the Caldera update site, and I can see that configuring a new kernal is a little involved, plus I am not quite sure what all to download so instead I am downloading the 3.1.1 workstation ISO. This seems to have the 2.4 kernal plus who knows what else, to save me from messing up anything. I will just start over.

I am new to Linux, having installed this 2.2 workstation just the other day. Cant get on the internet with it yet due to the modem/usb issue. Will this new O/S I am downloading recognize the USB ports on its own or is there anything special I have to do to it?

The 2.4 kernel has "full" usb suppord this won't mean that all usb hardware is supported. But I tought usb modems were supported even so you
still might have to recompile your kernel.

Well I know the Diamond usb modems are supported on the workstation 3.1.1 because it says so on their site, which will save me some $$$. Hopefully it will be plug n play, but if not then I will just have to learn how to compile it then
