ca't assembl mdadm array

I have a fedora 10 installation using software raid with the mdadm utility. I have a raid 5 array configured with 4 disks. I added another disk and did a grow to spread across all disks and that worked but after I rebooted the machine and tried to assemble the array it started up with 4 disks and no spares. I can add the disk and build onto it but it appears to loose the configuration when it is stopped ... not be growing the onto the other disk for real.

Could someone diagnose my problem or give me some advice?

Thanks to all
