I have never had any kind of consistency when burning cd's in linux. I have a lite-on 48125w. with say kernel 2.4.18 I had good luck, or maybe it was just the older versions of cdrecord and cdrdao. The cdrom constantly spins up and down up and down start burning gets to 15% and dies. I have tried both command line and K3B with the same results. I just want to burn the Fedora cd's nothing more. Last time I needed to burn cd's (redhat 9) I had to rely on windows to do it right for me, ouch that hurts. here is my log file. thanks for any help.

I had a similar problem that you did so my question is does your burner support burn-proof? Mine did so I enabled is by using -driveropts-burnproof. Never made another coaster again
Another possibility: Try burning at a slower speed. No matter what the top speed of you CD-RW is, I recommend setting the speed to either 8X or 16X tops, to avoid coasters. Unless you're running off dozens of copies, I consider burning to be a one-time expense, so I don't see that there's there really any significant difference between burning a CD in 1.5 minutes vs. burning it in 4 or 5 minutes.
Also, are you using quality blanks, or the cheapest, discount, no-name CD's of dubious origin? I've likewise had trouble with no-names, but have been using TDK's with good success. -- J.W.
" burning CDs in linux is always a risky busines !! "
Elucidate please... I've made more coasters, and had more problems with cd-r(w) drives in windows than I have in linux, but if there is some little known problem with burning cd's in linux I'd like to know what it is
Thanks guys
I am using scsi emulation.
My drive supports burn proof, and I have it on.
I am using IMATION cd's though I could try a different brand.
I have been trying to burn at 25x speed I will try 10x.
I can count on 1 hand how many times I have had problems in windows using NERO. I have burned in the last 2 years in windows probably around 500 cd's maybe even more. probably had a total of 5 coasters if that.
In linux I make more coaster than I do usable cd's.

I guess our problems have gone just the opposite I've had more problems with buffer under runs in windows ,and never with linux. I've been using X-cdroast without a hitch. the software I use in windows has been of the OEM variety, and may be to blame
