Does anyone know of any bootable system burn-in CD images, preferably Linux-based? Ideally, it would stress the machine at 100% utilization, read and write test the drives, test all video card functions, etc. -- all the usual "burn in" stress tests. Either commercial or free is okay, as long as the product is good.

I've searched Google and all I can come up with is search engine (for either commercial or free) spam from passmark, UXD, and a couple of other search engine spammers, and the ones that DO real tests are DOS-based and hopelessly outdated.

Why am I looking for Linux-based? Because I don't want to have a Windows installation on a system before I can run the tests, especially since we're shifting more and more over to Linux, both in-house and soon in retail. A Linux solution would be ideal then I can have a modular kernel with modules/drivers for practically every configuration imaginable.

You can try this link, http://www.pogolinux.com/support/Har...utilities.html
I have not used this but it looks a little like winstress for windows. There are also links to other bootable utility disks, one being the "ultimate boot disk" which has numerous drive test capabilities.
I have used the "ultimate boot disk", and I would not do without it.

If you do find something worthwhile, let us know.

rjohnson244, thanks.

I did find the Ultimate Boot CD but most of the utilities on it are hopelessly outdated, and the tests each need to be kicked off manually. Not really suitable for the purpose.

I will check out the others though. Thanks!

Try using folding@home or seti@home. They will abuse memory and cpu up to 99.99%. folding@home takes a few days to complete, so it is a good test for long uptime periods.

You could have a component conflict. Not all PCI/AGP devices work well together. Also motherboard companies uses different BIOS program schemes to reduce the time the system reboots. It is possible that BIOS version is screwing up some registers on warm boots. Try updating the BIOS. If updating the BIOS does not help, a complete system shutdown need to be done. Also flipping the switch on the power supply to off for a minute or two and then switching to on. The system should work in Windows without any problems next time up start up the system again. If you have installed Windows with APCI enabled in the BIOS, you need to have enabled or you will have problems. Linux does not care if APCI is enabled or not.

I have never had problems with Abit motherboards like the problems you are having.

SETI only tests the CPU and a tiny portion of RAM; hardly a "burn-in" test. Maybe I ought to have started a new thread because my request is related to the original only in that I am looking for a system burn-in suite for new systems.
