It's been some time, and I'm no expert in UNIX or Linux, but you can direct the output of a command to a vi file, like this:
ls -l > vi newfilename
Which would output the contents of your current directory, open a vi file with the 'newfilename' and capture the output in that file.
As is said, it's been awhile and you may have to create your file first, like this;
vi newfile
In that case you could output your list of directory contents like this:
ls -l > newfilename
(the -l just gives you the long version of your list with permissions etc.).
