You will need to find the original path that was used at boot time for retrieving the missing file. In my system, and probably in most Linux if not all, it is stored at /etc/rc.d/init.d
I am not sure is if one can restore this file once it has been removed. I know the Knoppix live CD allows mounting of the HDD partitions so you should be able to find the /etc/rc.d/ directory by opening a terminal and using the 'cd' command to navigate there. Poking this file into the appropriate slot would need the 'touch' command. You can read the man pages on both these commands by using the terminal on the live distro.
My personal preference would be to use the facilities of a live distro to drag and drop any mission critical files that exists in your lost Home folder onto a pendrive, if you haven't got them backed up elsewhere. Once the appropriate partition is mounted, GUI facilities should work just fine.
Then re-install the distro from scratch, erasing the old install in the process. And ask yourself why you wanted to erase the Network manager in the first place :-)) It is started at boot time for some reason, isn't it?
I'm afraid I can't be any more help as I am no guru, even though I've used Linux for many years. My computer is a tool for me, not a hobby, so I've tended to acquire the little I know as and when I needed it.
