Blew up SuSE 9.1... looks like bash problems

I did two things before I restarted and the machine started woking a lot less well:
I changed my backup partition from Fat32 to ReiserFS (following my previous post),
and I set it to default that *.dv files are opened in MPlayer.

When I rebooted I saw things not working:
Booting scripts saying problem with 'line 1' in starting both folding and SuSE Firewall.
So it doesn't reach runlevel 5 because it skips many services, and fails the Firewall ones
and 'kbd'. for example one of the excecution errors was:

wc: command not found

and when logging on as root:
-bash: locale: command not found

so there seem to be some instructions missing.
fortunately I had another hard drive, and so I installed Slackware 10.0 from a Linux
magazine, and am on it now.
I have check my filesystem for errors but there are none.

How do I get this fixed?

If you want/need more data, please tell me and I shall reboot and write it all down.

Thanks,

-Riddick
