BIOS Boot path, soft or hard startup?

Looking for a way to tell if the system started from a powered off state or just a soft reboot/restart. Platform would be RedHat and Suse.

Thanks in advance for any help,
-Tim

You can try the following command to see a list of reboots:

Code:
last reboot
Hope this helps.

Thanks could you explain how that can tell me if it was a hard or soft boot? Is there a difference here I'm missing telling me it started from a powered off state?

I've just run the above command on my box:

Code:
reboot system boot 4.12.2-1.el7.elr Fri Nov 3 18:56 - 05:23 (10:26)
reboot system boot 4.12.2-1.el7.elr Fri Nov 3 12:58 - 05:23 (16:24)
I know I started it the first time just before 1pm (12:58) and then powered it off ("hard shutdown"). And then I powered it on just before 7pm from memory (18:56). I highlighted the times in bold above for you.

The long and short of it: It's the times listed that give you a clue.

You can also look at the following to help you know more:

Code:
/var/log/messages
I don't know any better ways than this though.

Thanks for the suggestions but I'm not seeing anything telling me this was a soft reboot from a hard one.

Anyone else have any ideas? ACPI possibly?
