battlefield 1942 for linux

One of my Windows friends has battlefield 1942 and wanted me to buy it, but on the box it only mentions windows as the os. I went to EA's website and saw a linux update, but no discussion of how battlefield works with linux.

Does anyone know if there is a linux version that I need or buy or do I use the normal version with wine?

I believe, but I am not certain, that BF1942 only runs as a server under linux, not the game itself.

Thanks, that is perfect.

Can you only download it from transgaming's web-site?

Also, just as a side question, does it run other windows programs besides games? or is it just for games.
