Battery friendly distro

Hi, I was wondering if there was a way to configure knoppix or dsl or something to boot from a USB drive, and disable the hard drive, and maybe other stuff, to save power? Do they do this to begin with?

The HDD is probably the most power hungry thing in a laptop, and it would nice to be able to turn it off when all I want to do is browse the internet away from an outlet.

thanks.

Just about any distro can boot from a USB. Make sure your BIOS will let you.I don't know if your going to be able to totally shut off your hdd, but if you never mount any paritions you won't hardly use it. You could try removing it from the laptop all together and see if she'll boot from the USB. That would not only save your battery by not using the HDD but also weight.

EDIT: DSL is probably a good choice for this, but its definatly not the only. If your more experienced in Linux you could try Arch.

Yeah, I know about the different live distros out there. I was just wondering if there was one with that particular feature.

Anyways, I think I'm going to use Backtrack. It's based on Slax, and is used to do a network testing and stuff. And I could use myslax creator to add stuff to it. myslax creator has a "nohd" option, can't find any documentation on it, but I'll try it.

I didn't mention and/or mean live distros? Although you could use them too I guess. I didn't think of that.

well, I was only thinking live distros. If you could get a regular one to boot from USB, wouldn't that make it live?

Hmmm, thats a good question. What is the strict defination of live? The assumption with live is that it dosen't install anything to the harddrive, but if the USB becomes your harddrive, then is it still a live run? I didn't think it would be, but it may be. This is a philosophical question for the Linux Gurus.

At what point is a LiveRun Distro no longer a LiveRun?
