Bacula backup software
I am new to this forum. I replaced my XP Pro x64 / Syamntec Backup Exec 2010 software with Ubuntu 14.04.1 and Bacula 5.2.6 because XP Pro is not longer supported my Microsoft. I have three workstations
1.) Web Server
Intel DG33TL Board
Intel dual CPU
2 GB RAM
Intel PCIe NIC
This box backs up in Bacula as 2200 MB/min. Better than Symantec.
2.) Tape workstation
Tyan Thunder K8WE server board
Dual AMD Opteron 280 CPUs, 4 cores of 2.4 GHz
4 GB RAM
Intel PCIe NIC
HP LTO 3 tape drive
Two Exabyte VXA-320 tape drives
Adaptec 39320 SCSI controller
3.) Windows 7 workstation
Gigabyte P67 board
Intel i7 2600K CPU
16GB RAM
LSI Logic MegaRAID 8708EM2 SAS RAID controller with 128MB cache
two Seagate Cheetah 15K.7 300GB SAS drives RAID 1
two Seagate 10K.6 SAS drives RAID 1
NIC performance : 511 mbit/sec or 3750 MB/min
Hard drive performance in RAID 1: 1.097 GB/s cached reads and 850 MB/s cached writes
Bacula backup speed 210 MB/min. Backup Exec was over 640 MB/min.
I have been looking better Exabyte setup information. Media type is VXA-3 from what I found out. 64K buffer size. Which version is most stable. I am on 5.2.6. I was going to 5.2.13. I was not sure about 7.0.5, if I needed a license. How can I get better performance from the Windows agent.

Why on earth would you run software that's two FULL versions out of date, on a new installation? Load the latest versions of things first, before you go any further. At this point, you are missing out on MANY bugfixes, feature updates, etc., which may solve your problem right off the bat.

Why? New to Ubuntu. 5.2.6 was apt-get install. The other versions need compiling. Still learning how to do that. Can I install the new version over /etc/bacula directory of 5.2.6? I was considering copying out my conf files that I setup for all the jobs and wiping 5.2.6 along with the database and reinstalling a newer version. Which one would you recommend? I don't have an issue starting completely over and reinstalling a new DB and app version. I have my config files backed up.

Please see the LQ Rules; do not bump your own thread, and don't bump a thread unless you're providing more details/information. And if you re-read my first reply, you would see that I already TOLD you to load the latest versions of things...so, go and get THAT one and try it. The version you get from the repositories may be geared towards someone who only needs to back up ONE workstation...not many, and not with different OS'es. Again, load the latest versions of things, which may have already addressed the problem(s) you're having.

Getting backups working is important. Sorry to bump it. I thought you used Bacula.
I use Ubuntu and Bacula for backups and restores. My main Windows 7 workstation is my production workstation. My web server has 185GB of vacation and family picture. I need a good solid backup solution. I wished Microsoft did not completely kill off XP x64. Symantec worked well but will not work in Windows 7 or 8.
Bacula is designed to backup multiple computers on multiple tape drives in concurrent mode. With Linux based software, some versions of applications work better than others. I have read users don't recommend the latest versions of some applications due to issues. The problem is finding good documentation on Bacula.

I did, and I do, and again, read the LQ Rules. Expecting 'urgent' help because it's important to YOU, doesn't mean it's important to ANYONE here. We volunteer our time.

'Some applications' is very vague, and again, we understand what you're asking. That does NOT change the recommendation, does it? Yes, there are SOME applications that have bugs in the latest releases, and many more than FIX bugs. You asked for a suggestion, and you were given one; either take it or ignore it. Repeating the question doesn't get you much further.

...and aside from the Bacula site, that has EVERYTHING about the software, in HTML and PDF formats, along with a user wiki to search for questions/solutions, and the THOUSANDS of other sites you can find with a Google search, what more do you want???

If you're using Bacula in a commercial environment, and you're replacing a piece of commercial software, then PAY FOR BACULA too, and get support from them:
