backup approach

If I was to back up say / (the entire HDA) and used say kbackup. And I wanted to restore this back. After the restore is done would one turn the computer off at this point or shut down? At this point assuming I'm running ICEWM or some GUI. My though was to just reset the computer but instead I did a shutdown from x-term. After the system was back up my gui was messed up and it looks like no backup was done? I don’t know if kbackup even worked. What is the best method when restoring the entire drive. In this case its just one partition (the live partition). Should I restore in single mode?

FYI Libranet 2.8.1
