Automatic backups (of pictures, music, etc) to DVD
I'm trying to set up my home server, which runs Fedora 12, to automatically backup user documents like pictures, music. I want it to make a new DVD or ISO image on, say, a weekly basis, and to only backup the files created since the last backup. I discovered mondoarchive, but I'm not sure if this is capable of doing that. If so, please let me know. Is there a tool that I can use to do this? Thanks.
It is a job for a bash script, you don't need any application to do that. The command you need are dd, mkisofs, mount -o loop and cp. If you have a lot of data, you could also use du to check the size. An other approach would be to use tar and bzip and cut the file every 4.6gB, but it is harder to get the data back after you done that.
A tool called clonezilla is also capable of doing what you want to do if the data is on a separate partition than your Fedora install. But it is a little overkill for you.
Thanks for the tips, Elv. I've been doing a lot of digging since you posted. I'm rather new to linux, and am unfamiliar with bash scripts. Will this work for incremental backups? I've been looking at rdup, rsync, etc., but really am just aimlessly wandering at this point. Any more concrete directions to go?
